Our monthly podcast episodes will cover a range of topics aimed at promoting excellence in Leadership and Management for Better HealthGovernancein Health.
Introduction
Leadership, Management and Governance is one of the essential elements of realizing the dream of a strong health system and achieving greater health impact. Along with service delivery, health workforce, health information system, medical products and health financing, has long been recognized as key to improving performance in the health sector of a countryand, is central to achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) (https://www.coursera.org/lecture/health-systems/the-building-blocks-rg09q)
There is a consensus that good leadership and management is critical for better health governance that will ultimately lead to better health outcomes. This premise has been central to the proliferation of work in this area (https://www.doi.org/10.1093/heapol/czy052).
Better health system performance begins with inspired and inspiring leadership; sound management; and consistent, transparent governance. Rational systems and processes must support effective, transparent work planning and resource allocation. Managers at every level need leadership and management skills to motivate staff, improve service quality, and correctly implement interventions that are proven to work(http://www.msh.org/our-work/health-system/leadership-management-governance).
The lack of effective leadership and governance in the health sector has remained a major challenge in Nigeria and has contributed in no small measure to the failure of these country’s health systems (https://researchgate.net/publication/235393263).
Key Issues
- Leadership practices influence staff motivation and team work, with consequences for patient care
- Current health system contexts commonly encourage negative leadership practices
- Strengthening health leadership is a system-wide reform that requires intervention at individual, team and system levels.
