It is no news that Coronavirus is in Nigeria, let us keep ourselves and loved ones safe.

Highlighted below are what you need to know about the coronavirus, a public health emergency of International concern.

The recent coronavirus outbreak began in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. Now known as SARS-CoV-2, the virus has infected tens of thousands of people in many countries.

It is zoonotic and transmitted between animals and people.

Symptoms

Common symptoms and signs include:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Breathing difficulties and in severe cases;
  • Pneumonia
  • Severe acute respiratory syndrome
  • Kidney failure
  • Death

Prevention

Tips to prevent infection spread are:

  • Regular and thorough hand washing with soap and water; and use alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Maintaining at least 1 & half metres (5 feet) distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
  • Covering mouth and nose when coughing & sneezing.
  • Thoroughly cooking meat and eggs.
  • Avoiding close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing.
  • Follow good respiratory hygiene; cover your mouth and nose with a handkerchief or tissue or into your sleeve at the bent elbow when you cough or sneeze. Dispose used tissue immediately.

Treatment

  • There is no vaccine or specific antiviral treatment.
