The recent coronavirus outbreak began in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. Now known as SARS-CoV-2, the virus has infected tens of thousands of people in many countries.
It is zoonotic and transmitted between animals and people.
Symptoms
Common symptoms and signs include:
- Fever
- Cough
- Shortness of breath
- Breathing difficulties and in severe cases;
- Pneumonia
- Severe acute respiratory syndrome
- Kidney failure
- Death
Prevention
Tips to prevent infection spread are:
- Regular and thorough hand washing with soap and water; and use alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Maintaining at least 1 & half metres (5 feet) distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
- Covering mouth and nose when coughing & sneezing.
- Thoroughly cooking meat and eggs.
- Avoiding close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing.
- Follow good respiratory hygiene; cover your mouth and nose with a handkerchief or tissue or into your sleeve at the bent elbow when you cough or sneeze. Dispose used tissue immediately.

Treatment
- There is no vaccine or specific antiviral treatment.
